As Bonta Joins Newsom’s Illegal and Unconstitutional Scheme to Rig California Districts Even Further, Steve Hilton Announces Legal Challenge: “If you try to steal five more Republican seats, we will see you in court.”

Tonight, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on CNN that he is joining Gavin Newsom’s illegal and unconstitutional scheme to seize redistricting power from the independent commission established by California voters.

Asked by Jake Tapper if he supported Newsom’s autocratic threat, Bonta, supposedly California’s senior ‘legal’ officer, said: “Should Texas decide to take this draconian step, we will meet them every step of the way lawfully to blunt the advantage.” Tapper then asked, “So specifically, if they add five Republican seats, you’re going to add five Democratic seats? I mean, that kind of tit-for-tat?” “Yeah, I think we should,” responded Rob Bonta.

Bonta added, “Any effort they make will be met in kind, and it will be neutralized.”

Hilton stated:

“To be clear, there is NO way for Newsom and Bonta to carry out their outrageous threat “lawfully.” Newsom and Bonta’s illegal and unconstitutional partisan scheme is a threat to our democracy, and I will do everything in my power to resist it.

If Newsom and Bonta try to gerrymander California’s electoral system even further in Democrats’ favor, I will take immediate legal action. I will go to court to stop it. We will file a writ of mandate and seek an injunction to block this autocratic power grab.

If you try to steal five more Republican seats, we will see you in court.”

Republicans make up about 40% of Califonrnia’s statewide vote, but hold 17% of the congressional seats. Newsom and Bonta want to shrink Republican representation to just 7%. That is an assault on our democracy, the arrogance and authoritarianism of one party rule.

Steve Hilton has made clear he will stand with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents who still believe in fair elections and a government that answers to the voters, not one-party rule. 

He recently published his plan to end Democrat gerrymandering and restore independent redistricting, which would result in around twelve more Republican House seats from California.
