Hilton Asked COP30 to Deny Newsom the “Fake Climate Crusader” a Speaking Role

SACRAMENTO, CA – Steve Hilton, candidate for Governor of California, sent an urgent letter to the President and Executive Director of COP30, as well as the Executive Secretary and Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), demanding they bar Governor Gavin Newsom from any speaking role at COP30. Hilton called Newsom’s participation “a global insult,” citing his blatant climate hypocrisy of lecturing the world on the environment, as California imports half of all the oil extracted from the Amazon rainforest.

“Under Gavin Newsom, California buys half of all the oil drilled from the Amazon rainforest. It’s one of the most shameful hypocrisies in modern politics,” said Steve Hilton. “He flies to Brazil to preen in front of the world’s climate elite while bankrolling rainforest destruction. Worse still, by crushing California’s energy industry and raising gas prices to the highest in America, Newsom’s disgusting hypocrisy tries to fluff up his green credentials on the backs of the poor and working class.”

Hilton cited a unanimous 38-0 vote by the California State Senate earlier this year calling for an investigation into the state’s role in buying Amazon crude oil. “Even Democrats in Sacramento have been forced to admit how corrupt and hypocritical this is,” Hilton said. “Newsom talks about climate justice while his own policies bankroll rainforest destruction, kill California jobs and crush working families with the highest gas prices in America. It’s not leadership. It’s a cruel, heartless con.”
