“Newsom’s lying ads are a disgrace. This dishonest disinformation is a threat to democracy and must be taken off the air immediately.”

SACRAMENTO, CA — California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton today called Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 campaign ads “a flat-out lie.” Hilton has sent formal takedown letters to television and digital platforms demanding the removal of the deceptive spots, as well as writing to FCC Chair Brendan Carr requesting regulatory intervention.

Newsom’s lying ads claim Prop 50 ‘preserves and protects California’s independent redistricting commission.’ In reality, Prop 50 suspends the commission’s authority until 2031 and invalidates the maps created through the Census-based process. Instead, Prop 50 replaces them with Legislature-drawn maps that ignore the constitutional safeguards, including the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection clause, meant to ensure fair representation.

“This is an outrageous assault on our democracy,” said Hilton. “Gavin Newsom is lying to Californians purely in order to promote his presidential ambitions. Proposition 50 does not “protect” independent redistricting. It destroys forever the maps created by independent redistricting. Newsom’s lying ads are a disgrace. This dishonest disinformation is a threat to democracy and must be taken off the air immediately.”

“That is why we have sent takedown letters to media outlets across California, and asked federal regulators to intervene as a matter of urgency. Stations should do their duty and stop broadcasting partisan Democrat lies and disinformation.
